Gluten free and vegan BBQ Jackfruit Pulled ‘Pork’ Sandwiches – meaty, tender jackfruit cooked, pulled and tossed in a quick homemade BBQ sauce
Jackfruit! Ever heard of it?
My first introduction to jackfruit was a couple years back when Mike & I had wandered into this tiny little hippy cafe tucked away on the outskirts of our city centre. I couldn’t for the life of me tell you what I got but I definitely remember Mike ordering the pulled-not-pork sandwich off his gluten free menu and w o w was it good.
I couldn’t get over
a) How good it tasted
b) How spot on the texture was for a vegan sub
c) How it wasn’t already an insanely popular thing
I think in the past year or so it’s really started to pick up. In the vegan world most people probably already know about the wonders of jackfruit pulled pork, but I’d like to see it go a little more mainstream. It’s not just a good vegan food, it’s straight up delicious.
Last week I serve these to Mike & his friends and one of them didn’t even realise that it wasn’t actually pork until about half way through his sandwich.
How to Make: Vegan BBQ Jackfruit Pulled ‘Pork’ Sandwiches
It all starts with the BBQ sauce. You can absolutely use a different BBQ sauce here, but if you don’t have a premade one on hand – this one is super easy to make in very little time!
Just add your BBQ sauce ingredients to a sauce pot, mix and simmer for about 10 minutes. It’s a pretty versatile sauce and if you feel comfortable in your culinary abilities then I fully encourage you to play around with the spice and seasoning to really make this your own.
Once you’re all set with your sauce move on to the jackfruit pulled ‘pork’. Make sure you use young jackfruit in brine – it’s sometimes sold in syrup. After draining & rinsing the canned jackfruit set it aside momentarily to sauté your onion. Once the onions have gone soft add the jackfruit to your skillet along with the BBQ sauce and water. Cover and let simmer and soften for about 20 minutes. The jackfruit will become more tender in this time allowing your to break it apart easily so that it’s texture is more pulled pork-like.
I’ve been seeing them more and more stocked in health focused grocery stores and random vegan markets. If you’re not sure where to buy jackfruit – Amazon is always a good bet <<affiliate link. It’s definitely worth playing around with because it really does make for a great soy free, paleo friendly meat substitute – especially if you’re usually skeptical of faux meats.

Notes
Feel free to use your own favourite BBQ sauce instead of this homemade one.
Nutrition info below does not include calories for the bun/bread. When I did include the bread is skewed the nutrition by way too much for an ingredient that will vary from person to person.

I had no idea that I would like this as I never had jackfruit before. However, I can say that this was amazing! Turned out better than expected. I was lazy and made some mayo southern slaw with it and it was so good. Thank you for such a fun and easy recipe.
Sarah says
Yay! That’s Shannon – I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

“InSyrup” is ripe fruit. This is not the Jackfruit you’re looking for. But who knows?
Bodhi says
I’m curious what you mean by tomato sauce. Marinara? Plain pureed tomatoes? I’m a bit confused because I think of tomato sauce as a prepared dish rather than an ingredient. Thanks in advance for any clarification.
Sarah says
Hi Bodhi – sorry I should have been more specific there! You can actually use a few different things here – marinara, plain pureed tomatoes or a basic tomato sauce that’s cooked with just a few herbs and spices. I normally use passata just because that’s what I usually have on hand but I’ve also used marinara. I’ve also taken up crushed tomatoes and blended until smooth. Ideally you just want a (mostly) plain tomato sauce/puree that’s not too heavily seasoned or spiced. I hope that makes sense but if not just let me know!

Hi,
I can only find jackfruit is syrup?
Do you think i just rinse it well and use it?
Sarah says
Hi Carol! I’ve never used jackfruit in syrup so I’m not sure exactly how much the syrup permeates the jackfruit. That being said if it’s just in syrup and it’s rinsed well that might work. Let me know how it goes if you try it!

Walmart online has the young untold jackfruit in brine

They sell some Jackfruit BBQ in the refrigerated section of Natural Grocer’s stores which are only in the mid and west. It is the brand Upton’s Naturals, Jackfruit, Bar-B-Que, 10 oz for about $6. It’s in the refrigerated meat section. I haven’t tried it yet, but it would be an easy way to try it out. The Upton Naturals package has a Victorian man’s head on the package. They actually have many flavors like Thai, BBQ, Chili Lime, Original, etc. But I’ve only seen the BBQ at Natural Grocers. The packages do not require refrigeration so you could likely buy it on LuckyVitamin or Vitacost instead.

Thanks Cindy!

Hi! LOVELY 🙂 How would you recommend re-heating this if have made the day before for a dinner party?
Sarah says
Hi Stephanie! I’d recommend just reheating this in the oven at 400°F – about 10-15 minutes should be enough to heat it through. Hope you like it!
Amy says
Does this recipe freeze? Or keep in the fridge? I want to make it ahead of time for a bbq party?
Sarah says
Hi Amy! I haven’t tried freezing this myself yet but I do think it would be no problem. As for keeping in the fridge this should last about 5-6 days!
jocelyn says
Hi Sarah! I noticed that the sodium content is way too high per serving. If I am going to use the fresh young jackfruit instead of the canned one, how much sodium do you think it would be per serving?
Sarah says
Hey Jocelyn! You’re so right! Thanks for pointing that out to me! I went back through the recipe to see where the mess up was coming from and the bread was really throwing the numbers off! As for the fresh vs canned jackfruit I’d recommend plugging in your amounts into the myfitnesspal recipe app so that you can get the most accurate read. I’m not sure how canned compared to fresh jackfruit in the recipe so you might find that you need a little/more less to get the job done

Hi… can’t wait to make especially with homemade bbq sauce. Do you think this will also cook the same with cut up jackfruit… not from can?
Sarah says
Hi Jessica! I think it will mostly be the same but based on what I’ve read about fresh jackfruit I think you might need a little more prep – this article from the Spruce might be helpful: https://www.thespruceeats.com/preparing-and-cooking-jackfruit-3217061 According to this it looks like you’ll need to boil the flesh for a bit before using to soften it up
Jessica says
Thanks so much Sarah!! I appreciate It! Love your site!

Awesome! Can’t wait to try this. Trader Joe’s stocks green brined jackfruit!
Sarah says
I hope you like it as much as we do!
