How to Make these Golden Almond Cookies
Altogether, these cookies are fairly easy to make. The prep is really just a matter of whisking together the dry ingredients, stirring in the wet to form and dough and then just rolling and baking.
Steps
- Mix together the dry ingredients.
- Stir in the wet ingredients.
- Scoop, roll & bake!
Can I use almond meal instead of almond flour?
Yes! In many cases you cannot swap out almond meal/almond flour interchangeably but with these cookies you can.
Can I use another Type of Flour?
No. I tested this recipe using almond flour/meal. I can’t guarantee the same results if you use any other types of flours.
If you’re interested in making cookies with different types of flours there are plenty of other recipes on this site you might prefer instead.
- Sunflower Seed Chocolate Chip Cookies (nut free, paleo, low fodmap and vegan)
- Chickpea Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies (grain free/nut free)
- Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookies (used coconut, almond and tapioca flour)
- Chocolate Chip Zucchini Oat Cookies (vegan option and low FODMAP )
- Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies (flourless, paleo)
Can I use another type of sweetener? Low carb sweeteners?
- Agave will also work as another vegan option (though it’s not paleo).
- As for low carb options, I only recommend trying these with another sweetener if it’s a liquid one that can be used as a 1:1 substitute for honey or maple. These cookies rely largely on the maple/honey for moisture so you can’t use a dry/granulated sugar here or something like stevia drops because it won’t be enough to balance out the dry/wet ratio.
Cookie Notes
These cookies get their golden hue thanks to a little addition of turmeric powder. The turmeric makes for a slightly earthy and fragrant cookie that’s paired with both cinnamon and ginger. Turmeric is also know for its many health benefits, though how much of that you’ll get in these cookies – I’m not so sure.
It’s also important to note that these cookies aren’t super decadent. They’re lightly sweetened with either honey or maple (bakers choice) and are meant to be a healthier cookie you can feel good indulging in the next time you want to satisfy a sweet tooth without going too over the top. I recommend saving a cookie for the next time you sit down with a cup of coffee or hot tea.
Golden Almond Cookies
Soft, chewy middles and slightly crispy cookie edges - these Golden Almond Cookies will be ready before you know it!
Ingredients
- 2 cups (192 g) almond flour
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp (30 ml) melted coconut oil
- 1/4 cup (79 g) maple syrup
- 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F/180°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add the almond flour, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, salt and baking soda to a medium sized mixing bowl and whisk together until combined.
- Add the melted coconut oil, maple syrup (or honey) and vanilla extract to the bowl and mix until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
- Scoop out the dough into tablespoon sized pieces and roll into balls. Flatten the balls into round discs and then place on your prepared baking sheet, leaving an inch in-between each cookie.
- Place in the middle of the oven and bake for 10-11 minutes. The cookies will golden and crack slightly on top. Let cool a few minutes and then enjoy.
Notes
- You can make this with almond flour, almond powder or almond meal. You can also grind up whole almonds for a more crunchy texture.

Made these for a self care treat and to freeze some for air travel next week. Delightful. Not too sweet, but still satisfies the dessert craving. Goes well with a nice cup of tea or just on its own. I added black pepper for it’s interaction with turmeric. Great recipe!

Thanks for creating this recipe! I can’t wait to try it! One quick question – I’m aiming to cook/bake “oil-free”, so I’m kicking around some options to sub the coconut oil:
– 1 flax egg
– 2T pumpkin purée, apple sauce or mashed sweet potato (banana might have too strong of a flavor)
– 2T almond butter (not my top pick)
What are your thoughts?
Sarah Nevins says
Hi Joyce! I don’t think that should be a problem here since the amount of oil needed is already quite low and almond flour naturally contains a fair amount of fat. Out of the three options I think the flax egg and the almond butter would probably produce the most similar results while the mashed fruit/veggies might make the cookies a bit more soft. That being said I do think you’d likely have success with all of those options. I say go with your gut because it sounds like you already know what you’re doing 🙂
I hope you enjoy them!

These sound great to play with. I may try flax egg next

Can these be frozen? I would like to freeze the cookie dough balls.

Hi Marylyn! I haven’t tried freezing these particular cookies/dough yet but I’m almost certain that you shouldn’t run into any problems doing so!

Pretty bland tasting “cookies”. Followed the recipe as written. I was pretty disssapointed. Waste of almond flour. Not the best recipe out there for almond flour cookies. Skip it.
Sarah Nevins says
Hi Harley – Sorry you didn’t enjoy them! These cookies are meant to be more on the healthy/low sugar side so I totally get that they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re looking for a more traditional cookie using almond flour you’d probably like these almond flour chocolate chip cookies: https://www.asaucykitchen.com/almond-flour-chocolate-chip-cookies/

I have a thought concerning sweetness issues.
When I make smoothies, I use stevia along with other sweetness such as honey tends to bring out the sweetness of the other sweeteners /honey.
I don’t know how stevia translates when it comes to baking.
I’m thinking it’s worth a try. (I have not tried your recipe which sounds great especially as I have all of the ingredients minus the tumeric. Thanks for the recipe! 🙂
Sarah Nevins says
Hi Joyce! Unfortunately I don’t have too much experience either when it comes to baking with stevia so I can’t be too much help here!
Laura Chiuppi says
bland tasting is far from what this cookie is… can’t you taste the honey, ginger, cinnamon and turmeric?! They are delicious. The dough at first looks challenging to work with, I was hesitant if they might fall a part, but nope – came out awesome!
Sarah Nevins says
Thanks you so much Laura – so happy you enjoyed them!
Denise says
Can I use a different type of oil instead of coconut oil?
Sarah Nevins says
Hi Denise! I’m not positive because I haven’t tested this with another type of oil but I do think you’d be able to swap out the oil for another type quite easily since there’s not too much needed. A neutral tasting oil would work best – something like avocado, rapeseed, vegetable or palm oil, I think.
