Orange juice may not be what usually comes to mind when you think of lemon curd, but it’s sunshine color and bright flavor comes in handy in this homemade vegan lemon curd! The end result is a sweet and citrusy curd that’s easy to make with plant-based ingredients. No food dye or added spices needed!
⭐Recipe Highlights⭐
- Easy to Make: Simply mix, heat and cool. It’s much easier to make than traditional lemon curd since there are no eggs or egg yolks to baby sit as you cook.
- Simple Ingredients: It’s made with super basic ingredients you probably already have on hand. No food coloring, ground turmeric or weird ingredients needed.
- Extra Citrus: A little orange juice goes a long way! Not usually found in homemade lemon curd, but it adds a touch of sweetness to balance out the tangy lemon flavor and a hint of color to create the classic yellow color.
Vegan Lemon Curd Ingredients
- Citrus Juice & Zest: For best results, choose fresh squeezed lemon juice over bottled juice. The flavor will be brighter and much less bitter than the pre-squeezed stuff and you get the benefit of zesting the lemon peel. You can however use carton orange juice here if you like.
- White Sugar & Vanilla Extract: Use white/ caster sugar. Brown sugar is too dark and will make for a muddy looking curd. While natural cane sugar does have a lightly golden color, it’s not too dark so you can use that here.
- Dairy Free Butter: I haven’t tried this with coconut oil so I can’t say for sure but I do think it could work to a point if you don’t mind the added coconut flavor. I think vegan butter is most ideal here for both the buttery texture and flavor.
- Starch & Water: This is how you make a fruit curd without eggs or tofu. As the starch heats up, its molecules swell up, absorbing the surrounding water which acts as a thickening agent. You could say that we’re basically make a sweet, lemony gravy. Weird, but effective!
A Few Quick Tips & Notes
- Remember that the lemon curd will continue to thicken up as it cools down.
- For a glossier finish, use cornstarch over arrowroot.
- Tapioca starch doesn’t work well in high acid recipes because the acid interferes with its ability to thicken so I don’t recommend it as a substitute for the starch here.
- This doesn’t freeze well because the molecules breakdown when frozen. Once defrosted, the curd will be more runny than you might like.

Easy Vegan Lemon Curd (Egg Free)
Vegan lemon curd made with simple ingredients - no food dye or ground turmeric needed!
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp corn starch or arrowroot starch (16g)
- 1/2 cup water (120ml)
- 2/3 cup white sugar (135g)
- 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (120ml)
- 3 tbsp orange juice (45 ml)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp lemon zest
- 4 tbsp vegan butter (60g)
Instructions
- Whisk together starch and water in a small saucepan until no lumps remain.
- Add the remaining ingredients to pan and warm over a medium-high heat. Whisk together until the butter has melted and the mixture thickens, about 5-10 minutes. The hot curd will still be a bit runny at this point, but it will continue to thicken as it cools down.
- Remove from the heat and pour into an airtight container to cool to room temperature. You can use the curd ASAP, but it will still be a bit thin at this point. Cover and keep stored in the fridge for up to a week until ready to use.
