Three ingredient, homemade Chia Seed Jam! Use your favourite fruit, and touch of sweetener and a couple of tablespoons of chia seeds to make your very own healthy chia seed jam! | Gluten Free + Vegan + Low FODMAP + Paleo
This is probably one of those times when I’m being really dim, but I just now made the connection that the chia seeds that we eat are in fact the same chia seeds we use to grow the Chia Pets I used to love so much as a kid. I still can’t help but sing the ‘Ch-ch-ch-chia‘ jingle in my head every time the word comes up because I am a child at heart always and forever.
As much as I loved chia pets as a kid, I think I might actually love eating chia seeds more now as an adult. I love all the health benefits they provide: healthy fats, antioxidants, extra fiber, etc. More than that though, I just really dig that added crunch.
Not only that but when added to liquid, chia seeds gel up absorbing several times their mass and develop a gelatinous coating all around. This ability is how we end up with things like chia puddings, smoothies and in this case chia seed jam without all the fuss of traditional jams.
Making chia seed jam is a breeze and it’s entirely up to you – like a choose your own adventure type story. Simply wash and prepare your fruit of choice, cook , mash, add your seeds and then wait for the jam to do its thing. You can also adjust the amount of sweetener adding as much or as little as you would like.

Three ingredient homemade Chia Seed Jam
Ingredients
- 1 pound fruit of your choice, about 500 grams
- 2-4 tablespoons maple syrup or sweetener of your choice
- 2-3 tablespoons chia seeds
Instructions
- Clean and prepare your fruit as needed (removing pits, skin, seeds, stems etc).
- Heat a medium sized sauce pan over a medium heat and add the druit. Add 2 tablespoons of your sweetener to start with. If you need you can add the remaining 2 tablespoons later.
- Continue heating the fruit for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Bring the fruit to a boil and break down until it becomes a saucy mixture - that should take about five minutes. With a fork or a potato masher, mash the fruit to help break it down faster.
- At this point you can taste the jam and add more sweetener if you need.
- Remove the sauce pan from the heat. Add 2 tablespoons of chia seeds and let sit for 10 minutes. If the jam consistency is too thin add the extra tablespoon of chia seeds and let it sit for another 10 minutes.
- Once the jam has cooled store it in an airtight container and store in the fridge.

can I use flax seed insead?
Sarah says
Ooh interesting! I haven’t tried it out myself so I can’t say for sure but I do think that would work! I just did a quick google search and it’s not as popular as chia jam but it looks like it is something that you can make. From what I can see it’s pretty much the same, just with flax instead of chia.
Thanks for asking that – I want to go play around with that now!
