How to Make a Gluten Free Apple Crisp
When it comes to making an apple crisp gluten free friendly, there’s very little you need to change from a traditional gluten-filled recipe. Overall it’s still an incredibly easy recipe made with simple ingredients. The main difference is that you just need to use gluten-free flour and certified gluten-free oats.
All you need is a few pantry staples and some fresh apples and you’re well on your way to the perfect gluten free, cozy dessert. The overall process is pretty easy and comes down to three main steps:
- Apple prep: Cut your apples into thin slices then toss your apples in a little bit of sugar, spice and lemon juice.
- Crumble Prep: Whisk the dry ingredients together in a large bowl then stir in the melted butter or oil.
- Assemble & Bake: Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples and bake.
What are the Best baking apples to use?
The best baking apples are ones that will keep its structure while baking. Something like a Red Delicious might be good for general eating, but it will just fall apart in the oven.
As far as different varieties that are idea for best results: Granny Smith apples are always a good go to. They’re crisp, tart and stay tender after baking. In general green apples, or apples with green flecks are great options (think jonagold, braeburn, and golden delicious). Honey crisp and pink lady will also work! You can use even mix together a few different apple varieties. Use what you have and what you like!
to Peel or Not to Peel
This is up to you and your own personal preference. If you hate peel in your baked apples then go for it, otherwise just leave them in and save yourself the extra work!
